In the bucolic setting of the Forest of Arden, an imaginative exploration of identity, gender and love are made possible by the apparent nonlinearity of time’s passing; as Rosalind tells Orlando, “Time travels in diverse paces with diverse persons” (3.3, ll.261-262). The play nostalgically yearns for the suspension of time, adolescence, and a “holiday humor” (4.1, l.55), for the extension of an otherwise fleeting moment in which real world, courtly responsibilities can remain topographically and temporally distant.
For a UAL x National Theatre ‘As You Like it’ poster brief, I took to Hampstead Heath to shoot a contemporary, joyful, liberated Rosalind who cartwheels along the horizon and laughs at the camera woman.
